If the US is home to the best baseball and basketball leagues on earth, then itâs fair to say that England is home to one of the best football leagues on earth.
Of course, the likes of Spain, Italy and Germany have some splendid footballing talent on display too, but itâs often said that the English Premier League offers the best in terms of excitement, action and all round entertainment.
Whilst Manchester can boast two top clubs in United and City, and London several with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs while Liverpool has two of the oldest, most famous football clubs on Earth: Everton and Liverpool.
Indeed, itâs the sheer wealth of major clubs performing in Englandâs top division that sets it apart from other countries: and itâs the Eponymous Liverpool club that hogs the limelight alongside the neighbouring cityâs Manchester United.
Of course, Man Utd has certainly had more success in recent times, but Liverpoolâs history is shrouded with trophies and silverware, with the famous side of the 1980s securing the European Cup (twice), FA Cup (twice), League Cup (four times), and the domestic league a staggering seven times. Liverpool also hold the record â along with Manchester United â for the most ever top-flight division titles (18) and theyâve also won the League Cup more than any other team (7).
The clubâs domestic fortunes have taken a bit of a nosedive of late, but any team that can rack up not one, but two, European final victories in the past ten years has to be special; and thatâs exactly what Liverpool did, in 2001 and 2005 against Deportivo Alavés in the UEFA Cup and AC Milan in the Championsâ League respectively.
Liverpoolâs Anfield Stadium is a sight to behold from the outside. Sitting inside the stadium to watch the mighty Liverpool take to the pitch for 90 pulsating minutes of adrenaline-filled football â thatâs something that should be on any football fanâs âthings to do before I dieâ list. Indeed, Anfield Stadium is categorised as one of UEFAâs elite stadiums, which means it meets all the criteria to host a major European final.
The stadium has been their home since they were formed in 1892 and has hosted some fantastic spectacles over the years. Tickets for Liverpool matches are much coveted and can be difficult to procure, but for those planning a visit to Englandâs eighth largest city, where thereâs a will thereâs a way.
Perhaps the best bet for those not wanting to part with large sums of cash for a special league match package, is to take in one of their weekend cup fixtures, either in the FA Cup or the League Cup. Many season ticket holders wonât want to pay even more money to see the cup matches and therefore the availability of seats at these matches tends to be more favourable to visitors to the city. Thatâs not to say the games wonât sell out, of course, as Liverpool matches are nearly always full to the 45,000 capacity come kick-off.
Indeed, given that the city is world famous for its two football teams not to mention as the birthplace of the Beatles, Liverpool hotels are always in great demand; so make sure you book early if you intend to visit the city on the Mersey!

Former England skipper Alan Shearer recently claimed that United have been completely reliant on Rooney to carry their title charge but while Brown does not agree with that assessment, he does acknowledge having Rooney in the team brings an extra air of confidence.
“It gives you so much of a boost knowing he can always make something happen,” Brown said. “It definitely helps when you are playing in a game. Wayne is playing fantastically well at the moment.
“He is a pleasure to watch, not just for the fans but for the other players around him. We don’t rely on him but he is a big influence for us. He is expected to do a lot and what he does has been magnificent.”
A run of nine successive United away wins over Villa only ended with a goalless draw last season, but Villa’s last home victory over Sir Alex Ferguson’s side came in 1995, when “Fergie’s fledglings” were put to the sword in a 3-1 win.
United lost to Villa in the reverse fixture earlier this season, with Gabi Agbonlahor scoring the winner at Old Trafford, but Brown feels United have gained momentum since then.
“It is going to be a different Manchester United from now on,” Brown said. “For us now it is a question of being focused all the way.
“We have been down this path so many times before. If we keep our focus and our form remains good, we have a decent chance.”
