You’ll Never Watch Alone: Liverpool’s in a League of its Own

March 9, 2010

If the US is home to the best baseball and basketball leagues on earth, then it’s fair to say that England is home to one of the best football leagues on earth.

Of course, the likes of Spain, Italy and Germany have some splendid footballing talent on display too, but it’s often said that the English Premier League offers the best in terms of excitement, action and all round entertainment.

Whilst Manchester can boast two top clubs in United and City, and London several with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs while Liverpool has two of the oldest, most famous football clubs on Earth: Everton and Liverpool.

Indeed, it’s the sheer wealth of major clubs performing in England’s top division that sets it apart from other countries: and it’s the Eponymous Liverpool club that hogs the limelight alongside the neighbouring city’s Manchester United.

Of course, Man Utd has certainly had more success in recent times, but Liverpool’s history is shrouded with trophies and silverware, with the famous side of the 1980s securing the European Cup (twice), FA Cup (twice), League Cup (four times), and the domestic league a staggering seven times. Liverpool also hold the record – along with Manchester United – for the most ever top-flight division titles (18) and they’ve also won the League Cup more than any other team (7).

The club’s domestic fortunes have taken a bit of a nosedive of late, but any team that can rack up not one, but two, European final victories in the past ten years has to be special; and that’s exactly what Liverpool did, in 2001 and 2005 against Deportivo Alavés in the UEFA Cup and AC Milan in the Champions’ League respectively.

Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium is a sight to behold from the outside. Sitting inside the stadium to watch the mighty Liverpool take to the pitch for 90 pulsating minutes of adrenaline-filled football – that’s something that should be on any football fan’s ‘things to do before I die’ list. Indeed, Anfield Stadium is categorised as one of UEFA’s elite stadiums, which means it meets all the criteria to host a major European final.

The stadium has been their home since they were formed in 1892 and has hosted some fantastic spectacles over the years. Tickets for Liverpool matches are much coveted and can be difficult to procure, but for those planning a visit to England’s eighth largest city, where there’s a will there’s a way.

Perhaps the best bet for those not wanting to part with large sums of cash for a special league match package, is to take in one of their weekend cup fixtures, either in the FA Cup or the League Cup. Many season ticket holders won’t want to pay even more money to see the cup matches and therefore the availability of seats at these matches tends to be more favourable to visitors to the city. That’s not to say the games won’t sell out, of course, as Liverpool matches are nearly always full to the 45,000 capacity come kick-off.

Indeed, given that the city is world famous for its two football teams not to mention as the birthplace of the Beatles, Liverpool hotels are always in great demand; so make sure you book early if you intend to visit the city on the Mersey!

Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City side travels up the M62 to the KC Stadium to take on Phil Brown’s Hull City side.

In the last meeting between the two sides the East Yorkshire club earned a well deserved 1-1 draw, which helped to end the reign as Mark Hughes at Eastlands.

The Blues appointing the Italian on December 20, but it was speculated that it was after the draw against Hull City on November 28, that was the catalyst to Hughes’ demise. The Manchester City chairman, Khaldoon Al-Mubarakthen entered negotiations to bring in the Italian.

Under Hughes the Citizens had won only two games in his last 11, but since Mancini took over, the Eastlands outfit have four games out of five in the league but still sit in 6th place, the same as Manchester City were in under Hughes.

Mancini will have to work on his teams’ confidence after a disheartening loss in the League Cup semi-final to local rivals Manchester United over two legs after holding a first leg lead. The Italian will also have to get his influential left back Wayne Bridge in to the right frame of mind after all his off field distractions, over the John Terry affair.

For Brown’s Tigers the fixture can’t come quick enough. On Tuesday February 2, the Yorkshiremen took their “A” game to the reigning league leaders, Chelsea at the KC Stadium and were extremely unfortunate to only come away with a draw.

Ricardo Rocha could make his Pompey debut with Tal Ben-Haim moving out to left back at the expense of Nadir Belhadj, who could be pushed further forward. Marc Wilson has just signed a new three-and-a-half year deal with the club and should start alongside Rocha.

Aruna Dindane, who is not signing a permanent contract despite the claims of Lens’ president, is likely to be dropped with either Frederic Piquionne or John Utaka playing the lone frontman role in a 4-5-1 formation.

Rio Ferdinand is banned but Nemanja Vidic could make his comeback appearance after injury. Wayne Rooney, who scored a hat-trick against Pompey in the reverse fixture, is certain to start whilst Nani is also set to play after his performance against Arsenal last Sunday.

Wayne Rooney’s presence is enough to give Manchester United a lift such is the aura that has been built up around the England striker, according to club and international team-mate Wes Brown.

Wes Brown and Wayne Rooney : Manchester United team-mates since 2004.

Rooney took his goal tally for the season to 23 in the 5-1 win against Portsmouth on Saturday, equalling his personal best with three months of the campaign still remaining.

And the England striker will be attempting to break new ground at Aston Villa on Wednesday night, to pile more pressure on Premier League title rivals Chelsea.

Former England skipper Alan Shearer recently claimed that United have been completely reliant on Rooney to carry their title charge but while Brown does not agree with that assessment, he does acknowledge having Rooney in the team brings an extra air of confidence.

“It gives you so much of a boost knowing he can always make something happen,” Brown said. “It definitely helps when you are playing in a game. Wayne is playing fantastically well at the moment.

“He is a pleasure to watch, not just for the fans but for the other players around him. We don’t rely on him but he is a big influence for us. He is expected to do a lot and what he does has been magnificent.”

A run of nine successive United away wins over Villa only ended with a goalless draw last season, but Villa’s last home victory over Sir Alex Ferguson’s side came in 1995, when “Fergie’s fledglings” were put to the sword in a 3-1 win.

United lost to Villa in the reverse fixture earlier this season, with Gabi Agbonlahor scoring the winner at Old Trafford, but Brown feels United have gained momentum since then.

“It is going to be a different Manchester United from now on,” Brown said. “For us now it is a question of being focused all the way.

“We have been down this path so many times before. If we keep our focus and our form remains good, we have a decent chance.”
